Russian And Ukrainian Losses After Eight Months Of The War

As the conflict in Ukraine enters its ninth month, both sides are suffering heavy losses of personnel and military equipment. Estimates of Russian casualties run into the thousands.

Russia has lost more than 1,400 tanks, 2,500 armored vehicles, and 500 artillery pieces since it invaded Ukraine on Feb 24. Ukrainian equipment losses are significantly less, according to the open-source database Oryx.

Oryx data only includes visually confirmed equipment as destroyed, damaged, or captured, so the total is likely much higher.

In August, the head of Ukraine’s armed forces said that about 9,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in the war with Russia. In the same month, Pentagon officials put the number of Russian deaths at 20,000.
