A 15-year-old boy was rescued Monday after spending days clinging to an overturned 18-foot fishing vessel in the frigid waters of Alaska’s Bering Sea.
The U.S. Coast Guard found him about four miles east of St. Lawrence Island after the boat departed Savoonga on Friday and failed to return as expected early Sunday.

Severe weather prevented a Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircraft from beginning the search until Monday morning. The crew of the Northwest Explorer later spotted the teenager and pulled him aboard. Captain Adam White said the water temperature was about 10 degrees Celsius.
The teenager’s brother and cousin died in the incident. The survivor showed symptoms of hypothermia and was transported to Nome for medical treatment.
The rescue ended a dayslong search in hazardous conditions and brought the teenager to safety after prolonged exposure to the cold Bering Sea.

However, relatively young debris from impact craters may have covered some of this evidence, causing earlier estimates to underestimate the total shrinkage.
