A Turkish military cargo plane crashed in Georgia on Tuesday, killing 20 soldiers, Turkey’s Ministry of Defense confirmed. The C-130 Hercules aircraft was returning from Azerbaijan when it lost contact 27 minutes after takeoff, according to Reuters.

Footage shared online showed the plane’s tail separating midair before it plummeted to the ground, scattering debris across farmland. Georgian Interior Minister Gela Geladze said 18 bodies were recovered, with two soldiers still missing.
Turkey has dispatched an investigation team to work with Georgian and Azerbaijani officials to determine the cause of the crash.

The aircraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, had been in service for 57 years and was purchased by Turkey from Saudi Arabia in 2010.
U.S. Ambassador Tom Barack and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed condolences, honoring the soldiers’ service and reaffirming solidarity with Turkey, a key NATO ally.
