Ukraine is protesting a decision by the International Paralympic Committee to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their national flags at the 2026 Milano Cortina Paralympic Winter Games.

Ukrainian sports officials said they will boycott Paralympic events, though Ukrainian athletes will still compete, according to CBS News.

The IPC lifted a three-year ban imposed after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Russia has been granted six athlete slots across alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding, while Belarus received four slots in cross-country skiing. The games begin March 6.

Ukraine’s Sports Minister Matvii Bidnyi condemned the move, calling it unacceptable while the war continues.

Several European officials echoed the criticism, warning the decision could allow Russia’s anthem to be played at an international sporting event for the first time in years.

The IPC said it is reviewing concerns raised by member nations.
