21 Killed In Multi-Vehicle Crash On South Africa Highway

At least 21 people were killed and three others seriously injured after two minibus taxis and an SUV collided on a highway in South Africa's Western Cape province on Sunday.

According to police, the crash occurred between Leeu-Gamka and Prince Albert at about 9:30 p.m. local time.

The report said several other occupants were also taken to hospitals following the collision. Police have opened a culpable homicide investigation as forensic teams continue working at the scene.

The highway remains closed in both directions to allow authorities to recover victims and clear the wreckage. Western Cape Mobility officials have deployed emergency crews and advised motorists to take an alternative route through Prince Albert Road Station along the R407. The detour adds about 200 kilometers to the journey.

The deadly crash highlights South Africa's persistent road safety problems. According to authorities, 11,485 people died in road crashes across the country in 2025. Motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution, particularly on long-distance routes through remote areas such as the Karoo.
