800,000-Piece NYC Model Draws Crowds To City Museum

A massive handmade model of New York City featuring more than 800,000 tiny structures has become a popular attraction at the Museum of the City of New York.

Created by Joe Macken, the 50-foot-long model took more than two decades to build and was inspired by childhood visits to the Queens Museum’s Panorama of the City of New York.

Macken constructed the miniature city in his spare time while working as a bus driver, using balsa wood and foam board to recreate buildings and landmarks across the city. Videos of the model posted on TikTok attracted more than 10 million views in a week, prompting the museum to invite Macken to exhibit his work.

Visitors have used binoculars to examine the intricate details and identify familiar locations. One visitor even used the model to show his son the area near the Williamsburg Bridge where his father once lived.

The exhibition runs until Columbus Day. Macken hopes to take the model to another venue afterward and plans to add more than 50 buildings while eventually expanding the miniature city into New Jersey and Long Island.
