Demonstrations later spread nationwide, with nightly clashes between protesters and security forces. Iranian authorities have not confirmed the death toll and accuse foreign powers of stirring unrest.
President Donald Trump warned last week that the United States was “locked and loaded,” saying Washington would respond if Iran violently suppresses protesters.
His remarks followed U.S. military action in Venezuela and months of heightened pressure on Tehran.
Iranian officials acknowledged injuries among police and security forces and announced limited economic relief measures, including price freezes and subsidies. Protests continue as uncertainty remains over possible U.S. involvement.
