OpenAI says a system of roughly 10,000 AI agents produced a solution to the 90-year-old Navier-Stokes problem in about 88 hours, according to the company. The mathematical challenge concerns the behavior and movement of fluids and is one of seven Millennium Prize Problems.
OpenAI said its agents, powered by an internal AI model, could run code, access a cached version of the internet and communicate in groups while working on the problem.
Mathematics professor Tristan Buckmaster has raised questions about OpenAI’s work. He said its approach appeared similar to research he was conducting with mathematician Levent Alpöge.
Buckmaster stressed that he had not reviewed OpenAI’s proof and was not claiming that his data had been used.
OpenAI denied accessing their private work, while acknowledging it could not completely rule out de-identified data influencing its models.
