Asian stock markets fell sharply on Friday, following a technology-led sell-off on Wall Street as investors assessed the impact of Democratic gains in the US midterm elections. South Korea’s Kospi and Japan’s Nikkei 225 each dropped 6%, while Taiwan’s Taiex declined 4.5%, CNN reported.

Investors fear the incoming Democratic-controlled Congress could restrict or delay artificial intelligence infrastructure projects.

Concerns over data centres’ environmental and community impact had become an election issue, raising questions about a major source of demand for Asian semiconductor manufacturers.

The US market lost approximately $2.5 trillion on Thursday, with the Nasdaq falling 5.5%. Analysts attributed the volatility partly to investors reassessing expectations around AI spending and profitability.

South Korean and Japanese officials said they were monitoring market developments. However, analysts expect demand for computing power and memory chips to remain strong. Markets could stay volatile until the new US Congress takes office in January and its policy direction becomes clearer.
