AI Stocks Plunge As Industry Leaders Raise Safety Concerns

SoftBank shares fell more than 10%, while South Korea’s KOSPI declined more than 3%. Samsung and SK Hynix also posted losses. ASML shares fell in Europe.

AI-related stocks plunged Monday as investors reacted to growing warnings that the industry may be moving too quickly. U.S. Nasdaq futures fell 1.6%, while Nvidia, AMD, Intel and Qualcomm all declined in premarket trading.

Micron, which has benefited sharply from surging AI-related demand, also dropped. The sell-off extended overseas.

SoftBank shares fell more than 10%, while South Korea’s KOSPI declined more than 3%. Samsung and SK Hynix also posted losses. ASML shares fell in Europe.

According to Forbes estimates cited in the report, SoftBank founder and CEO Masayoshi Son lost more than $8 billion in net worth, reducing his fortune to about $72.5 billion.

The market pressure followed a call from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to slow frontier AI development.

The report said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman supported the warning, while Elon Musk also agreed with Amodei’s concerns. The warnings center on AI safety, rapid development and potential risks to internet infrastructure.
