Amazon has denied reports that it planned to label the cost of U.S. tariffs on products sold through its main retail site, after the White House sharply criticized the idea. A company spokesperson told Reuters that the proposal had only been discussed in a limited context and never implemented.
“The team that runs our ultra-low-cost Amazon Haul store has considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products,” the spokesperson said, adding that no such feature appeared on any Amazon platform.
Earlier, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said she had spoken with President Donald Trump, who reportedly called the alleged move “a hostile and political act by Amazon.”
The controversy briefly weighed on Amazon’s stock, which dipped 2.2% in premarket trading.
