Massachusetts lawmakers are urging the Federal Aviation Administration and Amazon to conduct a site-specific environmental review before proceeding with a proposed drone delivery hub in Westborough, near Boston.
Democratic Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren, alongside Representatives Jim McGovern and Lori Trahan, argue that the FAA’s July decision relies on nationwide environmental findings that may not address local concerns, including noise pollution, wildlife impacts and potential battery fires.
Local opposition appears substantial. One independent survey of 1,200 responses found 92% opposed to the facility, while a separate voluntary survey recorded more than 1,500 responses, with 93% against the project.
Amazon aims to expand drone deliveries to nearly 500 US cities. Westborough’s Zoning Board of Appeals is expected to consider a related challenge next month.
