Russia has released Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old American detained for more than four years, following a visit by US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Russian state media reported.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he had discussed Hubbard’s case with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Before Witkoff’s visit, a US official said the envoy would seek the release of Americans considered wrongfully detained abroad.

Hubbard, a retired teacher from Michigan, had spent decades working overseas before moving to Izyum, eastern Ukraine, in 2014. Russian prosecutors alleged that he signed a contract to fight alongside Ukrainian forces for monthly payment after Russian troops occupied the city in 2022. His sister, Patricia Hubbard Fox, rejected the allegation as false.

Hubbard’s release follows other cases involving Americans held in Russia. In August, former Marine Robert Gilman was freed on humanitarian grounds amid serious health concerns. His advocates alleged that he had suffered torture during detention.
