America’s Big Trade Win

Despite the uncertainty surrounding global trade, there are some bright spots – namely, booming trade in services. And here, ironically, the United States is leading the way, running a services trade surplus with most major economies and generating millions of good jobs for American workers.

GENEVA – News about global trade these days is all about tariffs, protectionism, and uncertainty. There is considerable anxiety among businesses, consumers, and public officials. But the world must remain calm and focused on the main objective: averting unproductive trade wars.

In fact, beyond the tariff-induced gloom, there are some bright spots. Global trade in services, for example, is booming. And there is a clear winner on this front: the United States.

Trade in services, especially finance, legal, entertainment, and high-tech services, has quietly become a major source of US economic strength. In 2023, US services exports were worth more than $1 trillion, accounting for 13% of the global total, and they expanded a further 8% in 2024. The country runs a services trade surplus with most major economies, including key partners in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, to the tune of nearly $300 billion in 2024. US companies last year received more than $144 billion in intellectual-property royalties and licensing fees – much more than their global counterparts.

American workers are reaping the rewards. Services exports directly generated 4.1 million jobs in America in 2022, according to the US International Trade Administration, while around half of the 5.1 million US jobs supported by manufacturing exports actually involve services. Importantly, tradable services jobs are good jobs. Professional and business services jobs paid an average hourly wage of $43.60 in February 2025, compared to $34.83 for manufacturing, according to preliminary data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Moreover, these well-paying employment opportunities are increasingly spread nationwide, and across a range of sectors, from finance and consulting to health care and creative industries. Services are also vital inputs for efficient manufacturing and farm production.

Despite accounting for roughly 80% of US GDP and employment, services are harder to imagine as a tradable part of the global economy than goods like clothing and chemicals. Economists often joke that the difference between goods and services is that you can drop the former on your foot.

And unlike non-traded services such as fast-food restaurants and home health care, tradable services are frequently invisible. You may not see it when US law firms sell their services to companies in Europe, when fans in Mumbai stream an American artist’s song on Spotify, or when billions of people around the world use Apple’s App Store, but all of it is trade just the same.

While trade in manufactured goods has lost momentum since the 2008-09 global financial crisis, services trade remains robust, generating major benefits for the US government, the country’s businesses, and its trading partners. It is also poised to expand. While goods accounted for three-quarters of the $30.5 trillion in global trade in 2023, trade in services is outpacing trade in goods. New World Trade Organization data indicate that trade in services grew 10% year on year in value in the third quarter of 2024, compared to 4% growth for trade in goods.

Meanwhile, new technologies are making it possible to supply and consume more kinds of cross-border services. WTO economists estimate that digitalization will boost services’ share of total world trade to 37.2% by 2040. Digitally delivered services – everything from remote consulting to streaming video – are already the fastest-growing segment of global trade, quadrupling in value between 2005 and 2023, to $4.25 trillion. The US accounts for more than 15% of these exports.

To raise future living standards, the US should lean into services alongside manufacturing. The share of employment in tradable services is set to increase, as manufacturing – like agriculture before it – becomes increasingly machine-intensive. Moreover, US output per worker is growing fastest in services, especially tradable ones, and AI promises to increase that productivity (although the jury is still out on its impact on jobs). Promoting investment in these high-productivity sectors is therefore a win-win proposition.

Of course, revitalizing manufacturing around the world would help reduce the vulnerabilities associated with excessive supply concentration and address national-security concerns. That is why the WTO has been calling for “re-globalization” – diversifying and decentralizing supply chains to boost resilience and to support the people and places, both in poor countries and advanced economies like the US, left behind by global economic integration.

To pursue policies that maximize innovation, growth, and job creation, the new US narrative about trade should integrate the country’s undeniable success with tradable services. Its impressive performance on this front is a clear win to be built upon.

"Just completed a very good telephone call with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine," Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social just moments after the hourlong call wrapped. "Much of the discussion was based on the call made yesterday with President Putin in order to align both Russia and Ukraine in terms of their requests and needs. 

"We are very much on track," Trump added. 


2. Trump Threatens Houthi Rebels That They'll Be 'Completely Annihilated' As Airstrikes Pound Yemen - ABC News

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened Yemen’s Houthi rebels that they’ll be “completely annihilated” as American airstrikes pounded locations under their control, while further pressuring the group’s main benefactor Iran.

The Houthi rebels attacked over 100 merchant vessels with missiles and drones, sinking two vessels and killing four sailors, from November 2023 until January this year when a ceasefire began in Gaza. The campaign also greatly raised the Houthis’ profile in the wider Arab world and tamped down on public criticism against their human rights abuses and crackdowns on dissent and aid workers.


3. 'A Catastrophic Blow' As U.S. Shuts Unit Investigating War Crimes In Ukraine - RFE/RL

A Yale University unit that has played a key role in gathering evidence on Russian war crimes committed in Ukraine will close down on March 28 after the U.S. State Department cut funding.

In an exclusive interview, the executive director of Yale's Humanitarian Research Lab, Nathaniel Raymond, told RFE/RL that the move was "a catastrophic blow" to efforts to document war crimes and bring people to justice. Raymond said the unit was currently tracking the location of 35,000 children abducted from Ukraine by Russia. Abducting children is a war crime, and Russian President Vladimir Putin has been indicted for it by the International Criminal Court (ICC).


4. China Blocks South Korean Inspection Of Disputed Sea Structure: Seoul - RFA

South Korean and Chinese authorities faced off at sea for two hours last month after Chinese authorities blocked the South’s attempt to investigate a steel structure set up by Beijing in their overlapping waters in the Yellow Sea, according to South Korea’s foreign ministry.

The standoff occurred on Feb. 26, when South Korea’s Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology deployed its research vessel RV Onnuri to examine the structure in the Provisional Measures Zone, or PMZ – a contested area where the exclusive economic zones of both nations overlap.

It’s another example of pushback against what authorities in Pyongyang view as an infiltration of South Korean capitalist culture. It also reinforces recent declarations that South Korea is no longer considered part of the same country, and that in fact South Koreans are no longer part of the same race of people, residents said.


11. Social Media Companies Face Potential Fines For Illegal Content Under British Online Safety Act - UPI

Britain has put into effect provisions of its Online Safety Act, requiring every online organization to implement action against illegal content or face punishment by sizeable fine or national blockage.

Ofcom, Britain's independent communications regulator, said in a press release that "from today, online platforms must start putting in place measures to protect people in the U.K. from criminal activity," and has started enforcing compliance.

As per Ofcom policy, platforms must now remove anything illegal as quickly as possible and do their best to lessen the possibility of said materials to appear at all.


12. Argentina's Milei Cracks Down On Protests After ‘Coup’ Attempt - Semafor

Argentinian President Javier Milei’s government introduced a bill to outlaw certain groups as “illegal associations” a week after a march by pensioners and football fans protesting against the president’s austerity agenda turned violent. 

Drastic cuts to subsidies on which a large share of the population relied have sparked widespread anger, but the spending overhaul has also led to the first budget surplus in 14 years and been welcomed by international finance institutions that are key to Argentina’s economic recovery. The fallout from the protests could derail Milei’s presidency, however: Argentina holds legislative elections in October.

A Bitcoin whale recently closed a massive short position worth $516 million, securing a profit of $9.4 million in just eight days. The short position, using 40x leverage, involved 6,210 BTC. 

This move came just ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting scheduled for March 19, 2025, which is expected to provide further direction on U.S. monetary policy and potentially impact investor sentiment towards Bitcoin and other risk assets.


14. U.N. Agency Warns Bird Flu Spreading At 'Unprecedented' Scale, Calls For Global Response - UPI

A United Nations health agency has called the spread of H5N1 bird flu "unprecedented" and called on world leaders to coordinate a global response.

The U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization cited hundreds of millions of poultry lost around the world as concern rises among health experts over the spread of the H5N1 bird flu and its spillover into other mammals, including cows.

Godfrey Magwenzi, deputy director-general of FAO, noted a major shift in the last four years in its geographic spread, with at least 300 new wild bird species since 2021 afflicted with bird flu, which pose "a serious threat to biodiversity."


15. Italian Postal Service Sees Surge In Mail For Pope Francis, Much Sent From Children - ABC News

The Italian postal service has seen a huge increase in mail addressed to Pope Francis since his Feb. 14 hospitalization, with some letters clearly written by children, bearing stamps from around the world and simply addressed to the pope at “Gemelli Hospital” in Rome.

Postal workers sort the mail into big yellow boxes, labeled “Papa Francesco.” Each day hospital workers come to take the letters away to make sure they get to the 88-year-old Francis at the 10th floor hospital suite where he is recovering from double pneumonia.


16. Sugary Drinks Linked To Greater Oral Cancer Risk, Study Indicates - UPI Health

A study released found that women who consumed at least one sugar-sweetened beverage daily had a nearly five times greater chance of developing oral cancer than those who largely avoided sugary soft drinks.

The University of Washington study comes as cases of oral cavity cancer are increasing at an "alarming" rate among mainly younger, non-smoking, non-drinking patients without any other identifiable risk factors. Most concerning has been an increase in cases among non-smokers globally, especially among younger White women.
