Ammonia Leak Forces Mass Evacuations In Oklahoma City Suburb

Hundreds of residents in Weatherford, Oklahoma, were evacuated Wednesday night after a tanker truck leaked anhydrous ammonia gas in a hotel parking lot.

The leak created a large plume that caused respiratory distress for people nearby. At least 36 individuals were hospitalized, and officials ordered shelters in place across parts of the city.

By Thursday morning, between 500 and 600 people were staying in emergency shelters.

Several nursing homes were evacuated, and all local schools closed for the day. Authorities said the tanker had stopped leaking and that air-quality monitoring was underway to ensure the area was safe.

Anhydrous ammonia is commonly used as a fertilizer but can cause severe burns when inhaled or touched.

The Weatherford incident follows a similar ammonia leak last week in Mississippi that also forced residents to flee. Weatherford, a city of about 12,000 people, sits roughly 70 miles west of Oklahoma City.
