Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei apologized Thursday after a leaked internal memo criticized the Trump administration, deepening tensions between the AI company and the Pentagon. The Department of War has now designated Anthropic a “supply chain risk,” escalating a dispute over how artificial intelligence tools can be used by the U.S. military.
In a blog post obtained by Axios, Amodei said the memo’s tone did not reflect his considered views and described it as outdated. He also said Anthropic did not leak the message.

Amodei stressed that the company’s priority is ensuring American warfighters and national security experts continue to access advanced AI tools during ongoing conflicts.
Pentagon officials defended the move, saying the military cannot allow vendors to restrict lawful uses of critical technologies that support troops in the field.
Despite the designation, Anthropic plans to challenge the decision in court. According to Axios, the Pentagon was still using Anthropic’s Claude AI for operational support, including activities related to Iran. Microsoft said Anthropic products remain available for non-defense projects.
