It may not seem like it, but foldable smartphones have been with us for seven years already, but are only now beginning to acquire potentially mainstream status.

Strong rumours suggest that Apple is planning to launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026, entering a market dominated by Samsung and Huawei who control 65% of it between them.

Although currently only 2% of global smartphone sales are foldable devices, they are gaining in popularity as slimmer, stronger and more reliable devices come to market – particularly Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold7.

A move by Apple into this territory could push foldable phones into the mainstream.
