Apple Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged iCloud Abuse Failures

West Virginia has filed a lawsuit against Apple, accusing the company of allowing child sexual abuse material to be stored and shared on its iCloud platform for years, according to CNN.

State Attorney General JB McCuskey alleges Apple prioritized user privacy over child safety despite having full control over its devices and cloud services. The lawsuit claims Apple failed to adequately detect and report illegal content, as required under federal law.

The complaint notes that while Google submitted more than 1.4 million reports to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in 2023, Apple allegedly filed just 267.

Apple rejected the claims, saying child safety is central to its operations and pointing to features designed to protect minors. The state is seeking damages and court-ordered changes to Apple’s detection practices.
