Officials say damaged roads, collapsed bridges, and downed power lines are hampering rescue efforts. Medical volunteers have been urgently requested.
The quake comes just a week after two deadly typhoons battered the country, underscoring the Philippines’ vulnerability to natural disasters.
Located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” the nation regularly faces quakes and volcanic activity, in addition to frequent typhoons. Authorities warn the death toll could rise as search and rescue operations continue.
