At Least 69 Killed As Earthquake Rocks Central Philippines

A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the central Philippines late Tuesday, killing at least 69 people and injuring dozens, according to local officials.

Cebu province, the hardest-hit area, declared a state of calamity after widespread damage forced thousands to spend the night outdoors amid aftershocks.

The town of Bogo, closest to the epicenter, reported the highest casualties. Images show body bags lining streets and tent hospitals overwhelmed with victims.

Officials say damaged roads, collapsed bridges, and downed power lines are hampering rescue efforts. Medical volunteers have been urgently requested.

The quake comes just a week after two deadly typhoons battered the country, underscoring the Philippines’ vulnerability to natural disasters.

Located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” the nation regularly faces quakes and volcanic activity, in addition to frequent typhoons. Authorities warn the death toll could rise as search and rescue operations continue.
