Backchannel Signals From Iran Emerge But No U.S. Negotiations Yet

Iranian intelligence has quietly signaled that Tehran may be open to talks with the United States to end the ongoing war, according to people familiar with indirect messages passed through a third country, CNN reported. The messages reportedly reached the CIA, but U.S. officials say no formal negotiations are underway.

The Trump administration insists the military campaign with Israel is entering a more intense phase aimed at weakening Iran’s missile capabilities and preventing the country from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the United States is “just getting started” with the operation. Lawmakers briefed on the conflict said they heard little discussion of diplomacy or a clear exit strategy.

Iranian officials have publicly denied sending messages to Washington, saying the country is focused on defending itself. Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds Iran’s leadership following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

President Donald Trump has sent mixed signals on negotiations, saying at times talks could happen while also declaring it may already be too late.
