In a recent thread on X, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent highlighted Japan as one of America’s closest and most constructive allies in global trade discussions. Following a positive phone conversation with Japan’s government, Bessent shared that President Trump had tasked him and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to begin negotiations with Japan.

Bessent appreciated Japan’s openness and measured approach to tackling key tariff issues. He expressed optimism about the upcoming talks with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and his Cabinet.

In stark contrast, Bessent criticized China for isolating itself by retaliating against U.S. tariffs, reinforcing negative trade behaviors. He noted that over 50 countries have responded positively to Trump’s push for a fairer global trade system, signaling a willingness to engage in meaningful negotiations in the coming weeks. Bessent’s remarks underscore the growing divide between countries willing to collaborate on trade reform and those, like China, choosing confrontation.
