Former President Joe Biden delivered an impassioned speech in Delaware, marking his first public appearance since announcing his prostate cancer diagnosis earlier this month.
Speaking in Delaware to honor troops during Memorial Day week, he urged Americans to defend democracy, drawing a line between their sacrifice and civic responsibility today.
“They’re not asking us to risk our lives,” he said. “They’re asking us to stay true to what America stands for.”
Biden didn’t mention Donald Trump, who days earlier claimed in a Memorial Day address that the presidency had been hijacked using an “autopen.” Biden also stayed clear of discussing his health, though he appeared strong and impassioned.
The event also marked 10 years since the death of his son Beau Biden, from brain cancer.
