Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that society may be underestimating the potential risks posed by increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems.
Speaking on CBS Mornings, Gates said advanced AI could eventually be misused for threats including bioterrorism and sophisticated financial attacks, while also rapidly transforming fields such as medicine and law.
His comments came after President Donald Trump dismissed some concerns about AI risks and described development of the technology as an international competition. Gates called AI an “evolutionary event,” arguing that its development is progressing faster than previous technological revolutions.
Experts have also raised concerns about whether governments and societies have adequate policies to manage the economic and social changes associated with advanced AI.
