Blanche: AI Shouldn’t Be ‘Breaking News’

Attorney General Todd Blanche said fears about artificial intelligence “should not be breaking news.”

“This AI issue that’s suddenly come up two months before our election is being—the president calls it a hoax,” he said. “The way this has come around today and not three months ago. I mean, I was watching the news today. Every Democrat senator suddenly races to a microphone to talk about AI after being eerily silent for months and months and months.”

He said the timing is “nothing but an effort to influence the midterms.”

Fears about the future of AI have been boiling up after Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon resigned from Anthropic, saying, “We’re on track for a lot of the most aggressive of these scenarios where, by the end of next year, things could be out of control already.” Another Anthropic employee, Evan Hubinger, chimed in, “We really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans!”

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, said, “We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models.”

Blanche said it is not his job as attorney general to regulate AI.

“I do not think it’s the job of the Department of Justice to regulate,” he said. “We’re prosecutors, not regulators. So we’re not going to try to regulate AI.”

“AI is extraordinarily beneficial to our society,” he added. “There’s a lot of great work that AI does, and and it’s also something that conveniently has become a flashpoint this week. And the president spoke about that, and I very much agree.”

President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social yesterday: “The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!”

“The Trump Administration has stopped AI ‘people’ from doing bad, or potentially bad, ‘things,’ like Dario (Anthropic!), who is now pretending to be a ‘perfect little angel’ – and we will continue to do so!” he said.
