BLS Delays Jobs Report, Citing Massive Shutdown Disruptions

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) announced Wednesday that it will not release a standalone U.S. jobs report for October, citing delays caused by the nation’s record-long federal government shutdown.

Instead, October’s numbers will be combined with November’s report and published in mid-December.

Economists expect the unreleased data to show negative job growth. Roughly 100,000 federal employees formally left payrolls in late September under the deferred resignation program, a shutdown-related policy that is likely to distort labor market readings.

The missing report creates major uncertainty for the Federal Reserve. Policymakers are split ahead of their December 10 meeting over whether to cut interest rates again, with one faction alarmed by a weakening labor market and another warning about renewed inflation risks.
