Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, 70, has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison after being found guilty of plotting a military coup to stay in power after losing the 2022 election.

Five Supreme Court justices handed down the sentence, with only one of them voting to acquit him – an outcome that will make it difficult for Bolsonaro to mount an appeal, as it’s normally only possible to do so if two out of five justices vote to acquit.
