Munich’s Oktoberfest was forced to shut down Wednesday after a man detonated explosives at his family’s home and threatened to attack the world-famous beer festival.

Police said the suspect, who had experience with explosives, set fire to his parents’ house in Lerchenau, north of the city, before fatally shooting himself near a nearby lake.

His 90-year-old father, mother, and a 21-year-old woman were seriously injured. A letter recovered from the scene contained a verified threat against Oktoberfest, prompting authorities to evacuate the festival grounds and issue an “extreme danger” alert citywide.

Special forces found booby traps, hand grenades, and burned-out vehicles at the residence, which was reportedly targeted over an inheritance dispute.

Officials confirmed that sniffer dogs and bomb squads swept the Oktoberfest site before reopening. The festival, which began September 20 and draws millions annually, will continue under heightened security.
