Britain, Canada, and Australia formally recognized the state of Palestine on Sunday, breaking with decades of strong support for Israel. The coordinated announcements come ahead of the UN General Assembly, where France and others are also expected to follow suit.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the move, saying it rewarded terrorism after Hamas’ October 7 massacre. He vowed there would be “no Palestinian state.” Far-right members of his government urged annexation of the West Bank.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer framed the recognition as a way to keep alive prospects for a two-state solution, despite Israel’s continued offensive in Gaza. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the decision, calling it a step toward peace.

The United States, under President Donald Trump, opposes the recognition and is expected to block any Palestinian bid for full UN membership.
