The British navy tracked a Russian Kilo-class submarine moving through the English Channel for three days, highlighting rising tensions with Moscow. The Royal Navy said a supply ship and helicopter monitored the submarine Krasnodar and its support tug after the vessels entered the Channel from the North Sea.
The sub stayed on the surface, despite rough weather, until surveillance was handed off to a NATO partner near France’s Ouessant Island.
London says Russian submarine activity near the United Kingdom has surged by one-third over the past two years.

British officials warn that Moscow is expanding its underwater intelligence operations, including efforts to map undersea cables. Defense Secretary John Healey recently launched a new program to bolster the Royal Navy’s anti-submarine capabilities.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also warned this week that Europe must prepare for the prospect of Russian aggression, calling the alliance “Russia’s next target.”
