Meta is facing a major legal challenge in California as 29 state attorneys general accuse the company of designing Facebook and Instagram to encourage addictive use among children and teenagers.
The case follows Meta’s recent loss in New Mexico, where a jury found the company liable in a child safety case. Meta was ordered to pay nearly $1 billion and plans to appeal.
According to the states, a California victory could result in damages of about $200 billion, while Meta has previously estimated potential exposure as high as $1.4 trillion. Prosecutors are also seeking nationwide changes to features such as infinite scrolling, autoplay and engagement-focused algorithms.
Meta called the claims unsubstantiated and the financial demands disproportionate.
