Catastrophic flash flooding has struck communities along the Georgia-Tennessee border after overnight storms dumped up to six inches of rain within six hours, prompting evacuations and emergency water rescues.
McCaysville officials declared a state of emergency on November 5 and ordered mandatory evacuations along West and East Tennessee Avenue.
More than 30 people were rescued as floodwaters reached six to seven feet in the downtown area, submerging vehicles, homes and businesses.
The National Weather Service warned that dangerous flooding could continue even after rainfall stops, urging residents to avoid flooded areas and move to higher ground.
