At least seven people were killed and 37 others wounded in shootings across Chicago this Labor Day weekend, according to city police. Most incidents remain unsolved, with no suspects in custody.
Despite the violence, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order barring Chicago police from cooperating with federal authorities, including the National Guard. Johnson declared that the city would not allow President Donald Trump to “deputize” its police force, insisting local officers will enforce only state and city laws.

The White House criticized Johnson’s move, accusing Democrats of prioritizing politics over public safety. “If these Democrats focused on fixing crime in their own cities instead of publicity stunts, their communities would be much safer,” spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said.
Chicago has long struggled with gun violence. City data shows 272 homicides so far this year, including 225 fatal shootings.
