Child Bitten By Alligator While Swimming At Florida Nature Preserve

A child was hospitalized after being bitten by an estimated 9- to 12-foot alligator while swimming at the Weeki Wachee Preserve in Hernando County, Florida, on Monday, authorities said.

The child suffered puncture wounds to the arm and leg that were considered non-life-threatening.

The injured child was taken to Bayonet Point Hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released the victim’s name or age.

A licensed wildlife trapper was called to the preserve and set traps for the alligator, but officials had not confirmed whether it had been captured.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office urged the public to exercise extreme caution around waterways and reminded swimmers to avoid areas where swimming is prohibited.
