China and Canada are seeking to rebuild diplomatic and economic ties after years of tension, with both sides pledging to accelerate cooperation and restore normal exchanges, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Canadian counterpart Anita Anand in a phone call Tuesday that Beijing wants to “deepen communication” and “consolidate the momentum of improvement” following last month’s “pivotal” meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Mark Carney in South Korea — the first formal talks between both nations’ leaders since 2017.

Carney said Ottawa intends to “make up for lost time,” signaling a thaw in relations long strained by the 2018 Huawei arrests, alleged Chinese election interference, and trade disputes.
China has since reinstated group travel to Canada, a move Anand called an “important step” toward rebuilding trust and boosting trade, energy, and tourism ties between the two nations.
