China has detained about 8,200 suspects and dismantled more than 1,000 alleged criminal gangs just 10 days after authorities launched a year-long crackdown on organised crime, according to the country’s Ministry of Public Security.
The campaign focuses heavily on crimes that have shifted online, including illegal lending, extortion, harassment, forced consumption and so-called “soft violence.”
The crackdown follows a broader campaign launched in 2018 under President Xi Jinping. Chinese authorities said organised crime has declined, with criminal cases reportedly falling 12.8% in 2025.
According to the ministry, the campaign will also target cybercrime, sexual extortion, doxxing and illegal data collection. The year-long operation is expected to conclude before the Communist Party’s next national congress.
