China Signals Cooperation With Fentanyl Crackdown Ahead Of Trump Meeting

China has introduced tougher penalties for fentanyl-related crimes ahead of President Xi Jinping’s scheduled meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, in a move that could support broader diplomatic efforts between Washington and Beijing.

China’s top envoy to the U.S., Xie Feng, described Xi’s visit as a “historic milestone” and said direct engagement between the two leaders could help stabilize bilateral relations. His comments were published by state news agency Xinhua shortly before Xi’s departure.

According to the report, non-pharmaceutical fentanyl crimes will face penalties comparable to those imposed for heroin-related offences.

Xie also pointed to cooperation on drug smuggling, cyber fraud and fugitive repatriation. He cited discussions over a proposed $30 billion reciprocal tariff reduction package and the return of 64 Chinese cultural artefacts and fossils from the U.S.

However, Beijing reiterated Taiwan and other core interests remain non-negotiable.
