China has confirmed that senior officials from Beijing and Washington held their first formal talks on artificial intelligence, just before President Donald Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The agreement has kept tariffs lower while limiting Chinese export restrictions on rare earths, materials important to technology and defense industries.
According to the report, the AI discussions included plans for a dedicated dialogue and a system for notifying each other about serious AI-related risks. Both sides described the talks as constructive and said they reached several areas of consensus.
The discussions come amid growing concerns over increasingly autonomous AI systems. Recent incidents have raised fears that advanced models could enable attacks to spread more quickly and become harder to contain.
