Officials in China warned the United States against interfering in issues involving Hong Kong and Taiwan ahead of an upcoming visit by Donald Trump to Beijing. According to reporting by the South China Morning Post, Chinese officials criticized Washington for calling for the release of jailed media figure Jimmy Lai.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said Lai should be punished under Chinese law and accused foreign governments of interfering in China’s internal affairs.

Lai, founder of the now-closed Apple Daily newspaper, was recently sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges related to collusion with foreign forces.

Beijing also warned Washington against selling weapons to Taiwan. According to a report by Reuters, the Trump administration may approve a $14 billion arms package for the island, potentially the largest such deal ever.
