China escalated its criticism of the United States after Washington deployed the USS Gerald R. Ford strike group and expanded its military presence in the Caribbean as tensions with Venezuela rise, PLA Daily reported.
The Pentagon has already sent eight warships, a nuclear submarine and F-35 jets to the region. President Donald Trump said he has not ruled out sending troops to Venezuela but remains open to dialogue with Nicolás Maduro.
A commentary in China’s military newspaper accused the U.S. of using “gunboat diplomacy” to pressure Maduro, promote regime change and secure influence over Latin American waterways and energy resources.
The article argued the U.S. crackdown on drug trafficking is a pretext, citing DEA data showing Venezuela is not a major drug source.
Maduro claims the U.S. buildup aims to remove him from power. The White House recently labeled the Cartel de los Soles a foreign terrorist organization, saying senior Venezuelan officials are involved. China continues to oppose U.S. military intervention in the region.
