Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick apologized Thursday after falsely claiming that no Americans had died in the Iran war. President Donald Trump publicly corrected the statement, saying that 18 people had been killed in Iran.

Lutnick made the inaccurate claim during a CNBC interview Wednesday while defending the conflict as an economic strategy. Pentagon data shows 18 U.S. service members have been killed and 757 wounded since the war began, for 776 total casualties.

In a Thursday statement, Lutnick said he had “misspoke” after confusing the Iran conflict with a separate Venezuelan operation. He expressed sympathy to the families of those who died, saying his heart broke for their loss.

The war has entered its sixth month, with public support for the conflict declining to 31%, according to the report. Meanwhile, 83% of Americans surveyed expect the fighting to continue.
