Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) announced he will step down from his top Democratic role on the House Oversight Committee and retire from Congress at the end of his term following the return of his esophageal cancer. In a heartfelt message posted on X, Connolly thanked supporters for their compassion and vowed to keep serving his constituents for the remainder of his term.

"The sun is setting on my time in public service,” he wrote, reflecting on his 30-year political career. Known for his staunch defense of democratic institutions, Connolly said he would step back from his Ranking Member duties soon but promised to remain engaged. “With no rancor and a full heart, I move into this final chapter full of pride,” he said. Connolly’s departure marks the end of a long career in both local and national politics, including more than a decade in Congress.
