Counterterror Chief Joe Kent Under FBI Investigation After Resigning Over Iran War

Former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent

The FBI is investigating former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent over alleged leaks of classified information, according to CBS News, citing sources familiar with the matter. The report said the probe began before Kent resigned earlier this week. The FBI’s Criminal Division is handling the investigation.

Kent stepped down after publicly opposing the Trump administration’s decision to go to war with Iran. In his resignation letter, he argued that Iran posed no imminent threat and claimed the conflict was influenced by Israel and its allies.

The White House strongly rejected these claims. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Kent’s statements were false and insisted Iran posed a real threat. She also downplayed his role in national security decision-making.

Former official Taylor Budowich alleged Kent had a history of leaks, though no details were provided. President Donald Trump said Kent was “weak on security” and defended the administration’s stance on Iran.
