Meta, YouTube Hit With Jury Verdict Over Social Media Harm

A Los Angeles jury has found Meta Platforms and Google liable for negligence in a case involving social media addiction and mental health harm, according to court proceedings reported by media outlets.

The lawsuit was brought by a young woman who said she developed severe psychological issues after prolonged use of platforms like Instagram and YouTube.

Jurors concluded the companies failed to adequately warn users about potential risks and that their design features contributed to her condition. The court awarded $3 million in damages, with Meta responsible for 70% and YouTube for the remainder.

Meta said it disagrees with the verdict and is reviewing legal options.

The ruling comes amid growing scrutiny of the tech industry’s impact on young users. Analysts say similar lawsuits could reshape how social media companies design platforms and disclose risks moving forward.
