More than 800,000 people have reportedly applied for citizenship in Liberland, a self-declared micronation founded in 2015 by Czech libertarian politician Vit Jedlicka on a seven-square-kilometre stretch of disputed floodplain along the Danube River between Serbia and Croatia.

Jedlicka says Liberland aims to create a highly libertarian society built around blockchain technology, limited government and minimal taxation.

The project claims about 1,200 citizens and has developed its own passports, language, cryptocurrency-based financial system and a small navy called the Liberty.

According to the report, applicants can contribute voluntarily rather than pay conventional taxes. Liberland uses its own digital tokens for payments, network fees, voting and governance, while an app tracks contributions through publicly displayed membership badges.

The project is part of a broader push among wealthy technology and cryptocurrency investors to establish private cities and alternative economic zones. Similar projects have emerged in Honduras, Venezuela and Norway.
