At least 33 people were killed and 18 injured Thursday when a Russian strike set two public buses on fire in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine, according to local authorities cited by CNN.
The attack is the deadliest from a single strike in Ukraine this year. The State Emergency Service said the strike ignited fires on the buses and nearby areas as rescue teams worked to assist victims and contain the blaze.
Kramatorsk and Sloviansk are key industrial centers near the front and form part of Ukraine’s remaining defensive stronghold in Donetsk. Kramatorsk has also served as a rear position for Ukrainian forces, although continued shelling has made that role increasingly difficult.
The attack surpassed the death toll from any single strike this year, although a coordinated Russian missile barrage on Kyiv in July also killed 33 people across the city.
