Democrats are divided over whether to expand their House election targets or concentrate limited funds on protecting vulnerable incumbents, according to CNN. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries wants to win at least 218 seats and gain additional seats to strengthen the party’s governing position.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee recently added six districts in states including Arkansas, Florida and Tennessee to its list of Republican-held seats worth contesting. Some lawmakers questioned the move, arguing that resources should go to more competitive races.
Democrats have raised $230 million but trail President Donald Trump’s political fundraising operation, which has about $400 million. House Majority PAC also faces a $38.5 million budget gap.
Some strategists warn against repeating the party’s 2016 mistake of pursuing broad victories instead of focusing on winnable contests. Others argue that competitive challenges can force Republicans to divert campaign resources.
