Democrats Demand Trump Reverse Waiver Allowing Russian Oil Sales To India

Congressional Democrats are pressing the Trump administration to reverse a temporary sanctions waiver that allows Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil, arguing the move benefits Moscow during the Iran conflict.

Rep. Sam Liccardo and Sen. Ruben Gallego warned Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in a letter that the decision could strengthen an adversary while American forces face threats in the region, according to CNBC.

The Treasury Department issued a 30-day waiver to help stabilize global oil markets after the war with Iran disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas flows through the strategic passage.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright defended the policy as a short-term measure to prevent price spikes and maintain supply for global refineries.

U.S. crude prices recently topped $108 per barrel, while Brent approached $110. Gasoline prices have climbed to about $3.44 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.

Democrats argue the waiver risks rewarding Russia while energy costs continue rising for American consumers.
