Denmark said Monday it will summon the US ambassador after President Donald Trump appointed a special envoy to Greenland, escalating tensions over the strategic Arctic territory.
Trump named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.
The president has repeatedly said the United States needs Greenland for national and international security and has declined to rule out force.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen called the move unacceptable and said Denmark’s sovereignty must be respected.
Trump said Landry would advance US security interests, while Landry publicly thanked the president and said he would work to make Greenland part of the United States. Rasmussen said those remarks crossed a red line.

Greenland’s prime minister rejected the idea, saying Greenlanders alone will decide their future. While many residents favor independence from Denmark, polls show little support for joining the US.
Greenland’s strategic location and mineral resources have drawn growing US, Chinese, and Russian interest.
