The Pentagon has authorised the Department of Homeland Security to test a military-grade heat ray for potential use along the US-Mexico border, according to a memo obtained by CNN.
The authorisation permits DHS to borrow one system for seven months, with the department responsible for developing tactics and determining its use.
Customs and Border Protection said it continually assesses technologies to improve operational effectiveness. The weapon has never been deployed at the US border, although officials previously considered it for crowd control.
Past discussions raised concerns about effectiveness, legal authority, potential injuries and risks to people pushed toward rivers while attempting crossings.
Critics also questioned whether using military technology against migrants would be appropriate. Some border agents reportedly doubt the need for the system amid lower crossings and increased staffing.
