Earl Charles Spencer, the brother of Princess Diana, has made fresh claims about King Charles III’s reaction to her death in his forthcoming memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.
Spencer writes that the then-Prince Charles sounded “giddily elated” and “like a lottery winner” during a phone call shortly after Diana died in a Paris car crash in 1997.
These accounts are Spencer’s recollections and allegations, rather than independently established facts.
Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on the book as a matter of principle but issued a statement noting that grief can affect memory, judgment and perceptions of past events. Spencer has defended his account, saying he remains certain about what he remembers from his conversations with Charles.
The memoir is scheduled for publication on September 22 and has already renewed public attention on Diana’s relationship with the royal family nearly three decades after her death.
